2011 R2R Week!!

Our school’s Right to Read Week is Monday, March 14th through Friday, March 18th. Join us for some lunch programs! Thank you teachers and students that completed the Right to Read survey.

•Books & IPOD or MP3 players.
•Lunch –n- Games. •Book Genres – how to find them and read Manga Backwards.
•Book Clubs - join a club whether it be audio books, virtual chatting or just old fashioned getting together with friends.
•Create your own Sticker using Microsoft Publisher.
•Author Susan Finelli of the book “Life’s Amusement Park: A Whimsical Perspective of the Rides of Life!” will be joining us!

In addition to lunch programs, the following activities are available:
•Audio Book Listmania!: Several teachers were interested in our audio books. To see a list of audio books available at our library, Google: NRMSListmania (Amazon.com allows lists to be created of products called Listmania’s) or please stop by our library to check them out.
•Author webquest: Scholastic has a terrific website of authors. Authortube ™ by Scholastics also includes video clips of popular authors and their responses to a set of interview questions.
•Book Exchange: Students can bring in gently used, middle school level books for trading outside the media center.
•Bookmark Contest: Students can turn in one 2” by 7.75” bookmark they made that includes anything related to reading or libraries. The top 20 bookmarks will be copied for students use in the library. Template available in the library.
•Fines are waived: Late fines will be waived for students this week only when books are returned. As a reminder, the library accepts Kleenex and hand sanitizer as $1 in late fines.
•Movie: Two video clips will be played on Monday, March 14th featuring the Reading Bill of Rights by Scholastic via Youtube followed by a Banned Book video . Transcripts of the video clips and possible discussion questions will be available in the library
•Pendant Flag Contest: Students can turn in one 8.5” by 11” pendant flag that can include any artwork related to reading or libraries. The top flags for each grade will be displayed in the library and can enter to win a prize. Template available in the library.
•Public Library Card: Students that bring in any public library card into the library can enter to win a prize.
•Reading Space: A rocking chair will be in the library if you would like to read to your students or take the chair to your class or pod.
•Reading Minutes Contest: Students can complete a reading log for the week due Tuesday, March 22. Grades that participate will be ranked by team. Winning teams will receive one medal and student certificates.
•Top Book Checkouts: Prizes will be given to students in each grade level that checked the most books out of our library.

Right to Read Week

Dear Parents & Students,

Our school’s Right to Read Week is Monday, March 15th through Friday, March 19th. For your information we will be having the following activities in the library:
•Bookmark Contest: Students can turn in a 2” by 7.75” bookmark they made that includes anything related to reading or libraries. A template for the book mark is attached. The top 20 bookmarks will be copied for students use in the library.
•Book Exchange: As a reminder, anytime through the year, students can bring in good quality, middle school level books for trading in the media center.
•Fines are waived: Late fines will be waived for students this week only when books are returned.
•Goin’ Green: On St. Patrick’s Day, Wednesday, March 17th we will be selling green bagels for $1 while supplies last. Bruegger’s Bagles has generously donated 25 dozen bagels for our program. Please bring the coupon below to Bruegger’s during Right to Read Week and our school will also receive 15% of coupon sales for purchase of library materials!!!
•Lunch Programs: Students are able to sign up for silent reading or games during lunch in the library loft.
•Library Card: Students that bring in their public library card into the library can enter to win a prize.
•Movie: A 10 minute Right to Read week movie will be broadcast during the school day
•Student Survey: A survey is available for students to share their input on our library program.
•Top Book Checkouts: Prizes will be given to students in each grade level that checked the most books out of our library.

About Our Library

The North Royalton Middle School library serves over 1,650 students and staff. Our library holdings include over 14,000 books, magazines, movies and equipment. Our students are able to check out headphones, microphones, MP3 players/digital listening centers, jump drives, digital cameras and are also able use digital camcorders for projects within the school. The 2008/2009 school year we checked out 12,949 items to students in the following categories:

Our fifth and sixth graders check out the most items and last year our seventh and eighth grade circulation increased 18% and 26% respectively. Two thousand items were added to our collection in 2008/2009 mostly through donations from our library partners. Thank you Friends of the Library!!

The library policies permit students to check out three items at one time to maximize access to student resources. Students are permitted to check out books for two weeks, magazines for one week and reference materials and equipment overnight. Students may renew items in the library or at home via the Internet if a hold has not been placed on the item. If students are unable to pay their late fines, we do accept donations of Kleenex or hand sanitizer to equal $1 in value. Please see the student hand book for further description of our library policies.

This year we are using a new Microsoft Access system to scan students in and out of the library. Not counting scheduled classes with teachers, since September 2009, we have had over 5,450 students working independently in the library during class or intervention time.

Our library space includes three, thirty computer labs as well as a ten laptop lab. We coordinate classroom use for a thirty laptop mobile computer lab. Our library includes three laser printers, two scanners, one student copier (10 cents per page) and two LCD projectors for classroom instruction. Teachers are able to check out the library space using an online scheduling system called phpScheduleIt. The scheduling system allows us to monitor and retain usage information for our facilities.

The NRMS library coordinates equipment use through our building for LCD/VCR-DVD carts, visual presenters, classroom performance systems, Smart Boards and other audio/video equipment. In the school year 2008/2009 we coordinated 1,600 equipment requests in our building.

The library has one annual scholastic book fair fundraiser that our community, parents, staff and students support generously. We are thankful for the profits that allow our library to purchase additional equipment and resources for our students.

Our school uses informational databases subscriptions from InfOhio and Gale; video streaming services from BrainPOP, United Streaming and Learn360 and other classroom management tools such as Moodle and on-line textbook resources. In the 2010 school year we will be adding originality authentication with Turn It In. NRMS uses Channel One resources to pipe various media and our student morning show to the TVs in the classrooms. Passwords to our subscription databases are located in the media center since the information cannot be posted online.

We are fortunate to have a courier system between our school and the public library so teachers with educator cards can have their materials delivered directly to our school if they wish. We are also able to use public library materials for student checkout by ordering the materials on our institution card and then checking out the materials through our school’s library catalog.
